VirtualSC could see more support this year if the South Carolina superintendent of schools has her way.

Molly Spearman proposed $1.2 million to hire 18 new teachers for the online program that serves middle and high school students, reports thestate.com. By increasing the number of teachers in this program, Spearman would like to see more rural, high-poverty schools provide access to VirtualSC classes.

This access gives students the opportunity to learn from high-quality teachers, which they may have limited access to in their hometowns. It also opens up their options when it comes to learning about subjects that their school doesn't offer.
