University of Texas at San Antonio to Launch Open Cloud Institute

The initiative was made possible because of start-up gifts and in-kind investments of $9 million, according to university officials.

(Tribune News Service) -- University of Texas at San Antonio officials on Thursday announced the creation of the Open Cloud Institute, an initiative to develop degree programs in cloud computing and big data in collaboration with the private sector.

“Today, is one of the greatest events in the last 45 years,” UTSA President Ricardo Romo said at the start of a press conference, saying he expects the institute to help the university become an international leader in open cloud computing education and research.

UTSA officials linked the initiative to the university’s push toward Tier One status and said it was possible because of start-up gifts and in-kind investments of $9 million, with a major portion coming from the 80/20 Foundation and other industry supporters.

The foundation has committed $4.8 million to support four endowed professorships, up to two faculty research positions, 10 graduate student endowments and research funding, officials said.

Additionally, UTSA has received in-kind donations from industry leaders such as Rackspace Hosting Inc., AMD, Intel, Mellanox Technologies and Seagate, and support from the Open Compute Project and the OpenStack Foundation.
