When did Labor Day start?

on September 3, 2012

Answer: Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882

The first Labor Day happened in New York City and was organized by the Central Labor Union, according to the Department of Labor. While the next Labor Day happened on Sept. 5,1883, the union decided to change it to the first Monday in September two years later.

As labor groups grew, more cities joined in, and states signed legislation creating Labor Day. But it wasn't until 1894 that it became a national holiday.
