How Many State Laws Related to Cyberbullying Passed So Far in 2012?

Answer: 3 state laws have been enacted that relate to cyberbullying as of Oct. 5, 2012

Oregon, Delaware and Louisiana passed legislation this year that included cyberbullying, according to a search on the National Conference of State Legislatures website. Since October is National Bullying Prevention Month, let's take a look at these laws.

On the West Coast, Oregon enacted SB 1555, which requires school employees to report cyberbullying, among other things. It also calls for a policy that prohibits harassment, intimidation, bullying and cyberbullying.

On the East Coast, Delaware enacted SB 193. This bill calls for the state Education Department and Justice Department to work together on a statewide cyberbullying policy for school districts and charter schools to use.

In the South, Louisiana enacted HB 236. The law requires Internet and cellphone safety instruction in public schools. This includes instruction on cyberbullying and responsible use of social networking and electronic communication.
