Chicago Lab Partnership in the Works with University of Illinois

on October 25, 2012

The University of Illinois, the city of Chicago and private companies have been in talks for the past year to create a research and development lab, The News Gazette reported.

This public-private partnership would establish UI Labs, a multimillion-dollar venture designed to help make Chicago a tech hub that University of Illinois graduates want to start their technology careers in. The lab would draw researchers from the university campuses of Urbana-Champaign and Chicago.

But faculty say that the new lab should not funnel funds away from campuses or compete for researchers with the university. In November, the Urbana-Champaign Faculty Senate plans to ask Larry Schook, vice president for research at the university system, to tell them more about the labs.

For now, university and city officials want to keep the details of the plan under wraps.
