The Secret About the Future: A Discussion on Economic Prosperity Through Education

WEDNESDAY, May 14: 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Room 204

The Center for Digital Education's economic prosperity summit will offer guests an opportunity to experience and discuss how education programs are having a positive effect on California's future economy.

You will have an opportunity to participate in three small presentation groups sharing California projects focused on science, math, and emerging technologies. Please join us for an afternoon coffee, sweet treats, and an event you'll remember as we explore how to make a difference through education.

THE AGENDA

1:30 p.m. -- Welcome to the Future!
Cathilea Robinett, executive vice president, eRepublic Inc.
Marina Leight, vice president of education, the Center for Digital Education, and publisher, Converge magazine

2:00 p.m. -- The California Experience Rotation

Math, Time for Class: Welcome to class! Learn about engaging math strategies that are helping students around the world improve their skills in this vital subject. Research will be shared showing significant test score improvements through the utilization of technology in the classroom.

Technology for Science Teaching and Learning: Being a scientist today is different than it was even 10 years ago. As the world works together through virtual labs and as the need for green engineering increases, this discussion will offer a look at how hands-on, minds-on science is what we need on California campuses.

The California Science in Education Initiative (CSEI) will also discuss funding 21st century science education.

Emerging Technologies: There is nothing more exciting than to watch a new technology application -- developed with millions in research and development funds -- become a new tool for learning. This presentation will share what's new, available and designed to make a difference.

3:00 p.m. -- Education Pavilion Tour
Behind-the-scenes tour of activities in the Conference on California's Future

After the keynote addresses on the 15th, there will be four educational sessions specially focused on providing insight, information and the possibilities of the future. The current schedule includes:

12:00 -- 1:00 CENIC. Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California
CENIC. Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California will lead a conversation on designing, implementing and operating CalREN, the California Research and Education Network, a high-bandwidth, high-capacity Internet network specially designed to meet the unique requirements of these communities, and to which the vast majority of the state's K-20 educational institutions are connected.
Speaker: Janis Cortese, Manager of Publicity & Communications, CENIC

1:00 -- 2:00 Mobility: Shaping a Vision for Education and Communities.
Would you like to check out a sea otter? Then come to this exhilarating discussion led by the CSU Monterey Bay Wireless Education & Technology Center (WeTEC). Speaker: Arlene Krebs, Director Technology Development, CSU Monterey Bay/Wireless Education & Technology Center

2:00 -- 3:00 The California State University's Accessible Technology Initiative
